Art can change the world, it seems. Additionally, the experience of art distracts from daily hardships and inspires people to imagine other ways of living, that are less painful and more flourishing. Its experience proposes a more fulfilling life. After all, joy is an inalienable human right, and we in art believe in joy and life.”

Preface

“A conversation”

With this exhibition project “A conversation” the second year students from the Master Degree program at the Fiber Art Department, School of Sculpture and Public Art is proud to provide an open milieu for a discussion of art and research in this regard.

The Russian scholar Mikhail Bakhtin considers ‘life at its essence is conversation.’ It is both the aim and the method. Art has always been looking for communication and connections, distinctly or indistinctly, cheerfully or melancholy, within all the possibilities. With their individual encounters, the artist’s walk through chaos, using ‘conversations’ to pick up the threads, weave out the whole story and join one another!

Materials, patterns and forms carry meaning, and this exhibition revisits the notion of ‘experiments’, which become an artwork. Meaning inherent in their construction – in how the gridded interlacement of threads in a woven cloth is a fundamentally different structure than the cycling knit thread that loops upon itself – and meaning prescribed through their entanglements with our history, life, and use. Sampling, testing and researching are essential in all artistic practices as ways to learn techniques, understand material interaction, and demonstrate outcomes.

The juxtaposition of these pieces made me think and lead me to interview and ask the artists questions. And besides the artist’s works a part of the whole exhibition is the student’s interviews, or dialogues, or as I call them - ‘conversations’. They agreed to talk about and explain, so profoundly and in such length, their thoughts, their feelings, their actions, their reactions, and choices they made. These ‘conversations’ are more than mere interviews. They are student’s ‘summing up’ their ideas and constitute as vivid a ‘self-portrait’ on what they are doing as an artist. The danger of interviews is that they always say the same thing, and interviews themselves often deal with the notion of amnesia and of ‘missing history’, hence these ‘conversations’ take a journey into the ‘as yet unmapped universe of the artworks’ from this exhibition.

Every word, sentence, conversation, dialogue and interview is an exclamation!

Every one ‘conversation’ is strident, demanding, challenging, absorbing captivating and provocative!

Art is a physical manifestation of an idea. What is art, it’s very difficult to say it, but when people say, “I don’t understand art. I don’t get it all,” that means art is working well. Art is supposed to be enigmatic. Art must asking questions — questions that might not be possible to answer.

The Workshop

Active process:

Participants take turns to communicate one-on-one, passing questions or words they want to say to others through another communicator.

When the participant receives a question from others, he/she has to report it back to the questionee in his/her own words from memory.

The relater needs to keep the identity of the questioner secret.

When the participants had finished asking questions in turn, everyone sat in a group and told their answers.

In a very short period of time, there will be subtle changes in the organization and memory of individual language in the presence of many people. When all these are put on the table, can the problem still be the same as before?

Unit X

Unit X

Active process:

During the exhibition, there will be a fixed area in Hall 1 for simultaneous display of the MIRO board page produced by our School of Sculpture and Public Art in collaboration with the University of Manchester. In this event, five participants will walk around the exhibition hall with mobile cameras and share the exhibition with the students and teachers at the University of Manchester.

Miro board is an online sharing platform that is very similar to roundtables. In the Unit X InFabric project, participants in different groups have separate islands on the Miro board, they can connect, collaborate, leave messages, send pictures and text each other. Through the process of this project, we work together as a community that has its own vitality.

"Dialogue" between people, between people and works with all issues connecting with fetters, and the activity to discuss and present is "visible line", utilizing the Miro plate form, with the accumulation of time, the paint with intuitive shadow interpersonal dialogue, conversation and individual self-expression is how to interweave each other, form a new network. With the tool of mobile camera, the participants will break the traditional form of online exhibition, break the latitude of space and carry out the form of "dialogue" into the exhibition by using online and offline forms as individuals.
